Box Score

Detroit, Mich. - Grand Valley State senior 3B Scott Allen wasted little time in making sure that Grand Valley State was on its way claiming its third straight GLIAC Championship as he sent a 2-1 pitch over Wayne State's version of the Green Monster in the top of the first to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead over Findlay. GVSU added six runs in the second and went on to claim a 9-4 win over the Oilers in the GLIAC Tournament Championship game at Wayne State. GVSU, which has now won eight straight GLIAC Tournament games and three consecutive tournament titles, will await word Sunday on its fourth straight berth into the NCAA DII North Central Regional Tournament next weekend. GVSU has won each of the last two North Central Regional titles and advanced to the NCAA DII World Series. The Lakers advanced to the 2004 NCAA DII National Championship a year ago.

Allen, who was named tournament MVP, added a two-run double in the second as GVSU scored six more runs and led 8-0 after two innings. GVSU's first two batters were retired in the second before the Lakers put together seven straight hits. Senior SS Ryan Lyster doubled and 2B Scott Smith singled deep in the hole between SS and 3B. Allen's double put GVSU up 4-0. CF Brandon McFarland singled in Allen and advanced to second on the throw home. C Nick Smith followed with a single to left that scored McFarland and RF Nick Sandy singled. 1B Chad Rohacs then singled down the right field line to score Smith and Sandy and GVSU led 8-0. Findlay scored a single run in the third and two in the fifth, but GVSU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Sandy and Rohacs put together back-to-back doubles.

Senior Marty Jackimowicz improved to 4-0 on the year with the victory on the hill. Jackimowicz yielded three runs on five hits in 6.1 innings of work. Junior Jeremy Dow gave up one run on one hit in the final 2.2 innings. Allen was 2-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored, while Rohacs was 2-4 with three RBI. Sandy was 3-5 with two runs scored, while S. Smith, McFarland and Lyster each collected two hits.

In addition to Allen being named the GLIAC Tournament MVP, C Nick Smith, 1b Chad Rohacs, 2B Scott Smith, OF Nick Sandy and picher Grant Payton were all named to 2005 GLIAC All-Tournament Team.
